What is Art? What makes an Artist an Artist?
ArtistMy art is deeply inspired by the fauve movement. For me, beauty is as important as truth. In the words of my partner, Clinton Bliss, "Conveying the truth in a beautiful way is a wonderful thing that enriches our lives and who we are."
I've been using thread and fabric to convey meanings I find in dreams, nightmares, poetry, myths, and make-believe since I was eighteen. Currently, I'm stitching a series inspired by Greek mythology's archetypes. It's a gradual process that mirrors life's complexities. Working with thread and fabric helps me weave meaning from the everyday randomness of life's story. I love to draw and paint, though I wouldn't consider myself an expert. Painting murals holds a special place in my heart. One of my murals -- hearts, birds, stars! -- is even a Pokémon stop! My paintings are inspired by the likes of Matisse, Franz Marc, Chagall, Paul Klee, and Harold and the Purple Crayon. My vision difference helps make my paintings truly my own, as I often view the world without depth perception, lending them a one-of-a-kind flair. When I'm moved to, I capture life's fleeting moments with a camera and share them. You can see my photos on Pexels and MorgueFile, where they are available for free use! |
Fabric and Thread Art
Each piece of original thread art is handmade without the use of machines. They range in size from 4" x 5" to 12" x 24". It takes about one hour of work per square inch. This collection represents over 25 years of work.
I am now working a new series of stitched art exploring the masculine archetypes in Greek mythology. This will complement the series of feminine archetypes in Greek mythology I began in 2012. It takes between seven to ten years to finish a series, and I am two years into my current project.
Please do not download or use these images in any way. They are a huge amount of work, and I am happy to share them with you to see, but please do not use them without permission. All pieces copyright (c) Laura Musikanski, 1982 - 2023.
